Success he hunted down his first cricket in almsot 2 weeks today!

jgamboa888 Apr 10, 2005 11:19 AM

He spotted a cricket today and dahsed over and snatched wit along with some paper towel. He thrashed to get the paper out and swallowed the cricket! I offered more but he hasn't been responding. Atleast he's eating!!

you must be relieved! R/A does help! Hopefully your little guy will continue to eat on his own

Very relieved, I do have a question though. I'm trying to offer crickets more often but the problem is when I taped paper towel on the inside of his cage to block the site of traffic outside and to prevent him from seeing his reflection, the crickets just climb up the newspaper and jump out of the cage. I took out the newspaper, and did what I should have done to begin with, taped it on the outside of the cage. Was this a bad idea? Another change in environment?

being new to beardies I cannot give you a definitive answer, but I doubt just changing the paper from inside to outside shouldn't be a problem. Regardless, it is still blocking the same view. So long as he keeps eating.

have you tried the cup in the tank? My guy is brand new, but he jumps right into that cup and eats 30 crix in a sitting! I do this twice a day and have some finely cut greens and strawberry in a dish all day.

I saw him staring down a molting cricket. The cricket was struggling to get out of his old skin and my bearded dragon was so confused. He kept eyeing it and then jumping around in circles and running around the cage only to return to the cricket and stare it at some more. Finally he walked up to eat and ate it. LOL!

I'm sooo glad the R/A worked for you. He'll gradually get a bigger appetite day by day. After he's steady I'd slowly start taking the newspaper off. He's gonna have to adjust sometime. Just tear like a quarter off the newspaper from the top and later bit by bit, perhaps he'll adjust to not have the newspaper there at all. AND...sometimes, Princes freaks out still and bumps her head against the glass. I don't know why she does it, but my male will do it ocassionally too.....
Congrats!

Thanks for recommending R/A! I'm glad he is turning around but I feel like had it not been for you I might have lost him! THANKS SO MUCH!

You are so welcome. I almost lost one of my dragons so I know what it's like. My boy Skit, my fave, for some reason got the twitches and had a seizure. I immdeiately recognized it as a calcium deficiency and dosed him up on it and he survived. But it was like watching a part of me die when he did that...I'm glad I could help....can you show me a pic of your baby...I'm curious!

I know exactly what you mean about having a piece of you die when you see your animals in pain or dying. I'm having problems with my female right now she just all of a sudden dropped off on eating. She used to let me hand feed her but now she's not interested in food at all. I think she's gravid because I know that my pair have mated recently and I'm thinking thats the problem but its killing me that she won't eat all that much if anything. I'm going to go get some reptaid and baby food soon if her eating doesn't pick up to see if that will help.

Hi- just read your post and figured I would put in my 2 cents. My cham is gravid (infertile, 4th clutch in a year and she is only 2 y.o.) She is in pretty rough shape since she seems to have a problem using the calcium (I supplement her for weeks with liq. and last night went to the vet for injections) in her body...but that's another story.

Anyway...she stops eating entirely for about 4 weeks - it KILLS me every time. I use the repta-aid and fortunately she likes it so I can get it into her easily. I am new to beardies, so can't comment on using baby food, (give it to my cats for bouts of diarrhea - LOL) but follow the directions on the RA for "additional" and she should do fine. Sorry if I just told you something that you already know, still getting "acquainted" with forum members so don't know everyones expereince yet

Its not a problem at all. I'd rather hear things I already know than nothing at all. I finally bribed her into eating more today. I don't have any silk worms in the house but I told her that for every cricket and piece of vegetable she eats I'll get her a silk worm and it seems to be working so far lol. Hopefully this weekend or sometime in the next couple of weeks I'll be getting at least one new tank because I really need to seperate them. All I'm asking myself right now is what did I get myself into when I offered to take the beardies.
