They get bigger than that. I had one that was nearly 14 inches SCL and have seen several bigger than that. I don't know what the record is but I have certainly seen some HUGE ones.
I caught one in the chactahatchee river that is 14 1/2 SCL and 15 3/4 CCL. It is 12.82 pounds. The 1998 peterson field guide By Roger Conant and Joseph collins states the record at 12 3/4 SCL so I was curious if others have found bigger ones. I called The fish and game and talked to a really helpfull guy. He emailed back later and found in some literature of one being 17.2 inches. The peterson feild guide has the swannee river cooter record at 17 1/4. They are supposed to be the biggest. Where did your big one come from?
LOL -- It was found in a pond near Philadelphia (obviously released as they are not native to Pennsylvania.) Never was sure of the exact subspecie it was.
