dragomlover Apr 11, 2005 12:11 AM

I have 2 leopard geckos and I bought them as albinos and they look like albinos but there first baby just hatched and its no albino. Could anybody tell me what is going on here? Im totally confused. I thought if 2 albinos bred you get all baby albinos.
If you could help I will be glad to e-mail you pictures of both parents im just new to this forum and don't know how to post pictures. Any info. would be great!

Do you have pics of the baby?

Often, the albino babies will look normal... They look darker than what we think they should.

My other thought is that you have 2 different types of albino. The three types are Tremper, Rainwater/Las Vegas, and Bell. You have to breed the same type to get more albinos. Otherwise you'll just get normal het for both types.

Well my male is a temper albino and my female is a jungle albino. I don't understand how there are 2 types of albinos? I thought albinoism was strate forward. Either there albino or there not. So all of my babies will come out normal but be hets? Does that mean they are 100% hets temper albino and 100%het jungle ablino?

First the jungle morph has nothing to do with the albino morph, it is an independent genetic trait.

The reason there are differnt types of albinos is because albinism is caused by either a gentic flaw that interferes with the production of pigment or a differnt gentic flaw that interferes with the pigment being afixed properly to the skin. Both genetic mutation are double recessive, meaning the gecko must posses two allels of each, if they have one normal and one albino they will just appear as normal although they would be het for albanism. You must have two differnt strains of albino, meaning they exploit differnt genetic mutations to show albinism, but all of the young will be 100% het for both of the strains of albino.

sorry this is long
hope this helps you understand

It all has to do with genetics. The babies are probobley het for albino, so you could breed them to another het albino or another albino and get albino's.

I know the babies will be hets because both parents are albino's but I still don't get why they didn't have all albino babies.

It is very simple why you did not get all albinos... There are THREE different strains of albino... Tremper, Bell, and Las Vagas.... The three strains are geneticly different..... If you breed a Tremper to a Bell, your neonates will all be normal looking because the strains are not compatible....

The same applies if you breed a Las Vagas to a tremper or a Bell to a Las Vagas..... They will all be normal hets..... The only way you will get all albinos is if you breed Tremper to Tremper, Las Vagas to Las Vagas, or Bell to Bell....

I hope this cleard it up for you a bit....

Yes it did thank you very much. So if I want jungle albinos I need another jungle albino to bred to my female? And does this mean that the babies I produced are 100% hets for temper and jungle albino?

GreggMM Apr 11, 2005 03:18 PM

"Jungle albino" is not an albino gene..... There are two genes at play..... The jungle gene and the albino gene.... You can have a tremper jungle albino, a bell jungle albino, or a Las Vagas jungle albino..... What you need to do is figure out what type of albino you have..... If you post a pic we might be able to tell you what type of albinos you have.... If not the only way to tell is to breed your albino with an albino that is own to be one of the three albino types....

Most likely you have a tremper and a las vagas..... They are the two more common types of albino...

Ok here is her picture. She use to have red eyes but now then are kinda redish gray. Do you know what albino line she comes from?

Looks like a Bell to me. I am sure you will get other opinions.

Can you post a pic of the male?
