Going to the (Serpentcity, et al.) well again...lol....A question about chlorine and chloramine

JP Apr 11, 2005 06:55 AM

Scott is so knowledgeable and helpful, but I'm trying not to wear out our welcome...lol.

Our town has been chlorinating our water since I've lived here. I use a faucet mounted "pur" brand water filter, which I understand removes the clorine taste and odor, but not the chlorine itself. I have used this water with my animals with no adverse affects for about 15 years.

The town has recently announced that they are shifting to a new method of water treatment involving chloramines instead. I understand that chloramines can be more harmful for reptiles, fish, etc. Will my water filter help with chloramines? Should I find another source for water for my snakes? What do you suggest? Any other comments/experiences out there?

Thanks to all!

....don't know if your filter will remove chloramines...contact the mfr on that one...

...I'm not a big fan of xenobiotics (chemicals not normally part of an animal's diet), chloramines being such...

...I'd suggest bottled water, ie Hinkley and Schmidt, or another quality bottled water, to be on the safe side...

...now...off to work!

I'm not sure how practical it is for me to water all my snakes with bottled water. That could run into some serious dinero over time. I've seen adds for "reptisafe" brand water additive to remove it from aquariums and drinking water...not crazy about that either. I've contacted the mfgr of my water filter...have'nt heard back from them yet.

Anyone else out there have any comments on chloramines in snake drinking water?

Thanks Scott...informative as always.

Personally I buy the big jugs of bottle water, whatever is on sale usually from Costco, and it's not to expensive. The stuff you add to the water makes it stink so I don't use that. Of course my first snakes lived 25 years on tap water/filtered tap water so who knows how bad it really is.
