OK, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is complex and none of our business right now, BUT. In a hasty and unthoughtout effort to implement the contraversial "disengagement plan" Israel's Prime Minister has recently anounced that new residences would be built in the Nezanim Sand-dune reserve. This highly valuable development property is also the last natural habitat of Israel's Grey Monitors as well as other protected species. The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel has worked hard for decades to protect this reserve against building industry lobbies and theives stealing sand. Numerous other solutions to the Prime-Minister's troubles have been proposed with far less impact on dwindling natural resources, and the new Nezanim proposal has everybody surprised.
Please take the time to write to the following well-intentioned agencies to indicate that there is international concern for the protection of endagered species. Including the Grey Monitor endagered in Israel.
BTW, Israel's Prime minister is currently meeting with US President George Bush in Texas discussing this very plan. So let the US press know there are invironmental questions to be asked as well.

Thank you,

Hi Reuben,
Thank you for this terrific post - although it is NOT a husbandry post, it is good to know this - and I have written to the persons you recommended, in addition to two Herpetologists in Israel who work with Varanus griseus griseus.
Thanks,
mbayless
