Beginner Uro

Greetings all,
My name is Keenan and I'm a dart/gecko forum guy. I currently have a nine month old female high-yellow leopard gecko and had a whites tree frog, two spring peepers, and a green tree frog. They died of red leg.

Well as for many people, one herp isn't enough! I am currently looking at dart frogs, uroplatus geckos, chameleon, and, you guessed it, uros.

I have read the article in this months issue of Reptiles 13 times, and have done numerous google searches. Unfortunatly, I still have a question:

What is a good begginer uro? I like the ocellatus ornatus, aegyptius, maliensis, and geryi.

Thanks,
Keenan

The one you'll probably hear about the most would be the Mali. They are relatively inexpensive, hardy, and easy to find. These are what I started out with and have had very good results. Just make sure you get a healthy animal. The malis aren't as colorful as some of the others but there are a few exceptions with some high yellow males. They are very personable. There is also a Uromastyx mailing list that has several breeders and knowledgeable keepers that would have some input for you as well. As you probably already know, just make sure you have everything set up before you bring one home. Good luck with your decision.

geryi or saharan uromastyx was my first one. I recently just bought a new male as i have added on a picture of him. These guys are pretty hardy and very easy to tame. Malis are also nice starter and are much less expensive, if thats what you are looking for. ornates are just awesome but they are a little out of my price range for now. from what i hear they are pretty easy going and calm. I would really go to doug dix's site and check out the breed discriptions, he gives alot of good first hand tips and generalizations. I know that eqyptians arent a good starter as they get pretty large and some arent easy to tame, as a first one they can leave a good mark if they wack you with their tail. But i love my saharans they were my first and are so awesome looking!
Good luck!!

Doug dix is at Deerfernfarms.com

What do you think about calling him Matches? i was watching scooby doo with a 4 and 7 year old the other night and a little dragon named matches was in it, i think that name kida suits him what do you think?

of set-up do you have? Doug's site is where I decided that i wanted a saharan, is that where you got your uros? As for the name, I think that it suits him perfecty! He looks like a match, too!

i have a vision cage, with a mix of playsand and vita-sand around the feeding area..it makes me feel safer. i also have a rock 'cave' hinding spot and i SECURELY stacked some rocks up and placed a slate piece on top. I have a hot side termometer and a cool side thermometer. The cage isnt per say pretty, but very useful. Doug dix uses them in his reptile room and for his breeders. its a nice cage in general. mine is 36" wide, 28" deep and 18" high, so it has a good deal of room. I have a plastic container without the lid on for dry food and 2 rock bowls for his veggies, greens and fruit. Yes i got him from doug dix. i think matches is a pretty good name! I love saharans and personally feel they are ok to start with especially if you had soem lizards before. Good luck and post a pic when you get one!
Good luck any other questions i'd be happy to post what i know!
