Iguanas of CB Smith Park, Pembroke Pines, Florida

anj213 Apr 11, 2005 10:50 AM

Thought I would share these pictures I took of some wild Iguana's that are now populating colonies all over South Florida. I've noticed this group grow over the last few years from about 3 Iguana's to more than 20 now and growing. Just look at the babies basking on the ledge. It looks like I can only post one picture per message. Is there a way to post more? I have 3 more pictures.

CB Smith park is on Pines Boulevard & Flamingo Rd. (Flamingo is 67th Ave. or Ludlum Rd. in Miami)across from the Pembroke Lakes Mall. There are also a bunch on the corner of Palm Avenue and Taft Street in Pembroke Pines too. I've seen them all over Big Pine Key too.

I'm Lowrider's mom and saw tons of igs at Cape Florida on Key Biscayne. I was there with my kids and saw one basking on the ledge of the water and when my husband went to see it closer he walked thru the grass and babies were running out of the way (hiding in the grass) . It was so nice to see. Sorry for not having my camera with me.

Pretty soon they will be all over South Florida. They do well here and fortunatly are only considered feral and not invasive so they can thrive down here with no immediate danger to our environment. I've leived here for 21 years and only in recent years have I seen so many iguana's. I remember seeing one in the Everglades like 15 years ago but never saw them out and around people like this until recently.

Yea tell me about it, before the iguanas, the Cuban Anoles were the big lizards around here (besides the Palm Beach Curly Tails). The iguanas of earlier times were very skiddish, now, you can approach them and they won't even blink!
