Fire skink care questions

TwoSnakes Apr 11, 2005 05:54 PM

Hello
Pet store I go to has great looking fire skinks. I am interested in one . I wanted to ask a few questions.
Can two be kept together or this an accident waiting to happen?
Ideal day/night temps?
Is it a skink that can be handled here and there or best not to, in other words can they be "tamed"?
I intend to house it or two if possible in a 30 gallon long tank with incandescent basking light for day and ceramic no light heat emitter for night (if needed).
Several inches of cyprus mulsch and driftwood pieces.
Any suggestions input would be great.
thanks

I have kept two together no problem but they were a pair. Two males could be a problem. I also had them in a 30 with Eco Earth(Bed a Beast) as a substrate, several inches deep. Kept moist they love to burrow in it. I top dress with terrarium/sphagnum moss and use under tank heaters. When I used overhead heating it seemed to dry everything out too much and I had some skin/shedding issues. Once I changed to the Eco Earth and kept it moist that solved that.

Mine are tame and handleable but it requires almost daily handling to keep them used to it. Great little skink pets, seem very durable and they love pinky/fuzzy mice as a weekly treat.

Hope this helps.
