Red Tailed boa Newbie

Melle Jul 10, 2003 12:25 PM

Hello

I am interested in getting a male colombian red tailed boa in the near future. I have been doing a lot of reading and hopefully I will have one by next month sometime. I have lizards, but this will be my first snake. I have a few questions about caging. How long can I keep one, if I get a young one, in a 30 gallon tank that measures about 22x18 inches? also, how long can I keep one in a 60 gallon breeder (those are 36x18 for length and width, right?) after he grows out of the 30 gallon? and one last question- what is the gallon size for a tank that I will need when he reaches his full size? and what are the measurements? Thanks for any info

Melissa

I wouldn't keep him in any sort of aquarium -- they suck in several respects. Get a plastic cage like neodesha or boaphile or several other companies sell that's made for the job. You'll eventually need a four-footer.

Unless visibility is important to you, a plastic sweater or blanket box with holes drilled in it will do fine until he outgrows it, actually.

Well a 30 gallon would be fine for a few months, and they can grow about 3-4foot a year til they get about 8 foot then slow down...so after a like 55 gallon for a 4-5 foot specimen,I would use only plexiglass cages when it gets bigger and outgrows that.
