What kind of snake did I find?

dan81 Apr 11, 2005 10:51 PM

Austin, Texas

Found in an apartment complex hallway (outside, ground level, on concrete)

10-11 inches long

Those are the best pictures I can get of it. I wanna know what kind of snake it is before I release it, and where to release it.

Nerodia erythrogaster transversa (blotched water snake). Not venomous, loves the water.

I realize not all snakes of the same species looke xactly the same, but this one looks rather different from pictures I find of Nerodia erythrogaster transversa online

The water snakes tend to lose their juvenile coloration as they age. Here is a link for snakes in the Austin area:

Check out the juvenile blotched water snake pics and see if they look more similar. As adults, they become more uniform in color.
