So how big do they get?

walker360 Apr 12, 2005 12:04 AM

I have a male veiled, who is pretty big, about 7 months old. Also I have a male tamatave, who is about 5 months old, and he's about half the size of the veiled.

I was just wondering how big panthers get? Is it the same as veileds or are they different in size?

I am by no means an expert, but I was told, (and seen with my veiled and panther) that veileds and panthers will be roughly the same sizes. Some will obviously be bigger / smaller than the other, but that has a bit to do more with their genetics. The main difference is that the Panthers are a bit more stockier and heavier than veileds, who are a bit lighter boned. Just some general obsevations ive seen with my guys. Hopefully a real expert will post

An adult male panther can be as big as 21 inches, but the average is around 12-18 inches.

The only good way to estimate how big they get is to look at the parents. I've never seen a baby be more than one inch shorter or longer than it's parents - unless the parents are of significantly different sizes.

Veileds can be as small as 11 inches total length to as long as 26 inches. Most of the small ones you see are small because of nutrituional problems - but there are wild populations of very small individuals. Similarly, not all veileds can get up to 20 inches. Those come from certain populations.

Seaside reptiles has some WC coming in from Arabia, and in the group are several 17" females and 26" males. I've seen a 25 inch male veiled, and it was a monster.

Veileds tend to be less robust than panthers, and are probably lighter on average. No panther's going to be as big as the biggest veiled, but most panthers tend to be bigger than most veileds, if that makes sense. Panthers vary less in size.

on average, veileds end to be about 15" long.

As for veileds, all the selective breeding going around is making 22 inchers a more common sight. Many breeders hunt around for the biggest males they can find, just to produce huge babies. I have only had one male, who is only 19 inches, but what he lacks in size he makes up for in color.
