Newly aquired baby corn!

kthulhu Apr 12, 2005 12:18 AM

I've never owned corn snakes before and was wondering if baby corns change color as they get older. If not, i was wondering if this is a normal cornsnake...i just thought the colors were a little dark, but then again like i said i dont have experience with corns.

I have the snake set up in a plastic enclosure that i got at a pet store. It has a hide box, half of which is over the area with the heat pad and the other half is cooler. It has a water bowl, which i've seen it drink out of. The air temp is at 75, and the area with the heat padd is warmer than that. The snake has only been in there for a day and is really active and constantly exploring, which i assume is natural curiosity, being in a new cage. I am worried however that he might get mouth rot or something along those lines if this behavior keeps up. Will he eventually settle down, should i put another hide box in there, or should i just not worry about it.
Thanx alot in advance.

Looks Motley to me. Maybe normal motley but looks more like a charcoal motley to me. Could be wrong though....

Looks like a cute little normal to me. The colors will come out as he grows. You will probably see a dramatic difference in just a couple of months.

I wouldn't worry about him roaming around too much. You should check the temps right on the substrate surface over the heating pad. You want to make sure that the temp isn't too high. I keep mine in the mid/high 80s.

The only thing to worry about with him exploring so much is that the lid to the box is tight enough. The little ones are really amazing at escaping and surprisingly strong. He is probably looking for a way out - make sure that he doesn't find one.

As it grows you will see ore and more color come in. From the dark saddles and orange dots showing up I would be willing to bet that is going to be a very nice looking natural.
I prefer natural to normal. Nothing normal about them.
