Any Leo Lovers that can help with Banded Geck. Rescue?

cherribomb Apr 12, 2005 12:47 AM

I've got much experience w/Leos, Beardies, Anoles, etc..

But my new "donation" is a Banded Gecko. It was given to me as a "California Banded Gecko". Does this type of Banded exist? He's REALLY cute!

What are the heating requirements? I've heard they need slightly lower temps than Leopard geckos (ie, 88 deg. on the warm side)

I currently have him in a 10 gallon w/a blue/black reptile light in a ceramic clamp and a mini heat pad, both on the right. He has 2 hides.

Does a banded need a humid hide?

How big will he get?

Any help is much appreciated. I just got him in today!

I use to breed banded geckos of all sorts before i got into leos. The banded gecko u got is probably a texas or tuson banded gecko if CB but if its wild caught chances are its a desert banded gecko caught in the california area. I highly doubt its a San Diego bandei only becasue their endangered and not worht the risk of catching.

Banded geckos are really easy, they reach a max lenght of 5" some reach alittle over but never above 6". A small tank, 10 gallon will work for the rest of its live, with a under tank heater works best. They do perfer cooler temps of around low 80's in the days to 68-72 at night, and they are nocturnal. sand is alright but like with all reptiles u run the risk of impaction. Crickets seem to work best, but i got all of mine to each mealworms after a while. They are terestrile and desert dwelling so low humitity. Oh ya these geckos have been known to talk at night so be warned, not all do but a territorial male will.

Looks like he's a baby Coleonyx Mitratis-- Central American Banded, NOT California. He's got huge black eyes & he's a cutie!

I read that they like to burrow so I was gonna put some moist sphagnum moss on the warm side of the tank -- is this true?

He's much calmer when held than my baby leos but he races around like mad in his tank. I think he's a wannabe climber!

He's got pinhead cricks & mealies but he seems to hate the calcium supplement I dusted them with -- he made this weird face and liked his lips for like 2 minutes when he ate the first one...

Thanks so much for the help!

I also keep California Desert Bandeds (Coleonyx variegatus variegatus) and keep them exactly like I do my Leos.

He looks to be a Colenyx Mitratus (Central American Banded). Its hard to tell if he's eating (he has meal worms and pinhead crickets) but he looks pretty plump. I've got him at a slightly lower temp (very slightly lower) and I put in some sphagnum moss for him cause he seems to enjoy digging.

Only problem seems to be that he races around like a mad man all night. Every morning his water has been kicked out of the dish all over the 10 gallon. I put some more stuff in there for him to climb on (fake tree trunk, moss, fake flowers, and a big hunk of driftwood.

He can be seen here: (check link)
