Louisiana Restricted Snake Regulations

wildtropics Apr 12, 2005 10:16 AM

The commissioners of the LA Dept. of Wildlife & Fisheries met Thursday, April 7, and approved regulations presented by Dr. Jeff Boundy of LDWF and endorsed by the Louisiana Gulf Coast Herpetological Society. The regulations, slated to be effective in August 2005, require a permit for snakes in excess of 12 feet and most venomous snakes, here after referred to as "restricted snakes". The regulations require these snakes to be locked up when not being attended to and also 500 hours of experience and education for the venomous permit. In the event of an escape, the LDWF must be notified immediately. The LGCHS worked diligently with members of the Louisiana Reptile & Amphibian Task Force over the past two years to craft these regulations. They enable enthusiasts to keep unique reptiles under conditions that maintain security and control. Also, it allows the LDWF to keep track of potentially dangerous animals instead of banning them. Go to the LGCHS website for the text of these regulations. ~Bill Watts~ Chairman LGCHS Legislative Committee.
