A genetic brown back....

Joe Compel Apr 12, 2005 12:00 PM

This female yearling is maturing nicely. This picture accurately captures the blushing, fading spots, and brown tones that most of my brown backs exhibit.

Enjoy,
Joe

Hey Joe. What type of inheritance do you believe this to be (simple recessive, dominant, etc)? Have you bred two brownbacks together? Nice looking snakes.....was wondering if there could possibly be a "super" form.

toshamc Apr 12, 2005 01:25 PM

- but I thought two genetic brown backs made an all black/brown snake????

Your thinking of cinnamon or black pastels

toshamc Apr 12, 2005 04:36 PM

I was thinking the one from Brian Sharp - I think he calls it a chocolate, and I thought it was created from two black backs. But I could be wrong probably am I had a long night. LOL!

with cinnamon pastels or black pastels like rwoodyer said. At this point I do not think they are the same mutation (brown backs vs. cinnys or black pastels) but that is only my opinion. They don't look the same to me.

it appears to be dominant or co dominant. I have not bred two brown backs to each other. I hope to do so next breeding season. I think that there will be a super form but only time and trials will tell.

These will make KILLLER Hypos or Pastels......speaking of Hypo Pastels..how about an updated pic of one!..

Joe Compel Apr 12, 2005 05:43 PM

I bred a brown back to a pastel this year.....hopefully she will go for me. I can't wait to see the combination of both traits. The brown backs are a shade or two lighter than a normal but I think it will have a nice effect when crossed with a pastel.
The hypo and brown back cross will have to wait until next seaon. At best I would only be producing brown backs het for hypo. Still....I can't wait to get that project started.
You'll have to wait for updated shots of the hypo pastels. I hope to finish the hypo pastel page on my site in a couple of weeks so I'll post some at that time. I hope an old shot will do for now. I don't think I posted this one on this forum so it might be "new" to some. Look for a new thread.
