Female laying eggs right now

BigJon Apr 12, 2005 01:13 PM

i'm really excited b/c i think my female is laying her first clutch of eggs right now. she is half buried in the substrate in the tank. of course, she ignored the egg-laying box i put in the tank LOL.

don't be discouraged if you don't find anything this time. most times they'll do this for 1-3 days before they actually lay them. i usually smooth the substrate out after if i don't find anything, that way it is easier to tell if she's been digging again.good luck.

how long can this take? she's been lying there half-buried for at least three hours. maybe she's exhausted?

It can take up to 8 hours (in my case) but usually 3-4 hours it might take her a little longer if this is her first time laying.

well, she moved from her spot and hasn't layed any eggs yet i smoothed the area out as recommended and misted the cage lightly. i also removed the top from the egg-laying box i have in there hoping she'll use it, but i'm not too optimistic.

the first few times i was looking for eggs i actually removed my females into smaller containers, where the only substrate in the cage was the lay box. that way it forced her to use it and it was much easier to find. ( something as small as a 20qt. sterilite container would be sufficient)
as i said, i've seen them do that withing 3-4 days of laying. it's always a dead give away though.

nothing yet. i'm headed back to work in a bit so i'll check again when i get home tonight. if there is still have nothing, then i will probably isolate her in a set-up with the lay-box as the only substrate as suggested by flamed crestie. (i currently have her in a 'naturalistic' setting.)
