Reading through the proposed/postponed bill is it correct to assume that Gila's and Beadeds are currently legal in MD? It clearly states poisonous snakes in the current law and they are trying to change it to outlaw venomous reptiles.
It seems to me that even if the law is passed (which I hope it is not) as long as you possess the animal before May 31st, 2006 you will be allowed to keep them. Am I correct in my understanding?
Thanks,
Jason
You are correct. Venomous lizards are currently legal in MD, although some counties have ordinances banning certain exotic animals.
If this bill would have passed, however, it would have made breeding illegal, and would have banned bringing any new venomous lizards into the state. Current animals would have been grandfathered, but only if one registered with the authorities.
I've heard that there has never been a human death from the bite of a Gila monster (although the "cure" has caused many deaths in years past). Does anyone have any information on this?
Katrina
