Help!! Need cricket supplier. All the ones I go through come with unwanted beetles

gregthegecko Jul 10, 2003 01:23 PM

Hi,
All the crickets I get through the mail keep showing up with some kind of small beetles. I keep trying new companies, but this is ridiculous. I just ordered a box of 500 crickets and there were about 10-20 of these things in there. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced, CLEAN supplier? Thanks.

Well I would go through a company as close to you as possible. SAometimes they wont ship in winter or if they ship and it takes longer to get to you you'll have more dead crickets. I go through top hat cricket farm. they are very clean. I've never had the beetle problem with them. Then again they are only a couple hours from me and in the same state (michigan). So its possible that maybe the beetles are getting into your crickets when they are delivered. I dont know for sure.

peace,
nathan

I use reptilefood.com and I have never had a problem w/beetles. They are in CA and I'm in FL. At the pet store I usually get a mealworm bug (adult) and I just feed it to my beardies w/the crickets (I feed from a cup).

Hope this helps.

My former supplier put in some cleaner insects that ate all the crickets that died. But it was a very small amount of them. And you didn't lose many crickets.

I have been told that those bugs are used in the cricket places to eat the dead crickets. They don't harm the live ones, just remove the dead ones. Sometimes they accidentally get put in with the crickets.

the dragons love them!

Yep that's what they're used for... by cricket farms.

One of my old professors back at the school I did my undergrad at uses them to eat the flesh of dead animals so he can mount their skeletons for scientific display.

Where do you live? I get mine from the super worm farm and live about an hour away from them. Never got any beatles or worms with my crickets either. I really like them because they will give mixed sizes of crickets. I get half an order of large ones and half smaller for my young beardie.

the beetles aren't "unwanted bugs" they are demesteds (sp?) they have those living with their crickets so that they'll eat the dead crickets. Suppliers who use these bugs have healthier crickets because the live ones come in contact with less dead crickets.
