He buried himself, should i let him stay down there?

UroJade Apr 13, 2005 09:51 AM

i dont know if he's trying to hide, get more humidity or what but about 20 minutes after going into the the twenty long with the ectoearth he buried himself on the warm end and hasnt come out. should i just leave him there?
what should his tempertures be from cool end ,warm end basking spot? i want to make sure thats right.
im worried about him eating, his collard green leaf had a few bites out of it on the first day i brought him home and he hasnt touch food since, i tried more collard greens, butter nut squash, strawberry, a peice of ecto-therm iguana yummi, a slice of the greens flavor and a slice of cactus flavor.
im going out today so im going to look out for the canned food to try that, i'll also get carrots and apples since thats what he ate in his last home maybe he'll prefer those and then i can move him onto healthier stuff once i get him eating regulary

i'll post a picture of his tank as soon as i can

oh could it be the brightness of the lgiht that bothers him? as far as i know he had no lighting in his previous home

If you just got him he is probably just adjusting to his new surroundings. My box turtle stayed buried most of the time for his first week and I couldn't get him to eat for about 3 weeks.

The link that StephF gave is to a really good website. How old is your turtle? I would also try some meat (like cooked chicken). My box turtle loves sardines (packed in water and well rinsed), moistened ZooMed Box Turtle food, moistened Wardleys Aquatic Sticks and night crawlers.

i dont know his age but according to his previous owners he's around 9ish, but only just under 3 inches long, im going to ask again to make sure it was this turlte they were talking about when they said nine years.
they didnt know how to take care of him though so his shell is lopsided,no tail, and weird looking back legs
they ded him carrots and apple slices,
i've been giving collard greens, butternut squash, stawberry, and zoomed boxturtle food in a can
the only thing i know he ate for sure was a part of teh stawberry becuase it had bites taken out of it, i've only had him for about a week

Sounds like he needs more protein. Try some live worms, wax worms, crickets, etc.
