cricket delivery disaster - sort of stuck

lele Apr 13, 2005 10:52 AM

Hi all,

Well, after defending my favorite cricket supplier to denise1last month I ended up have a disaster. Not knowing how much he would eat I had only orderd 250 crix last time around. Realized I needed more I ordered 1000. I ended up making a trip to fedex last night to pick them up (this was no fault of vendor) and when I opened up only about 150 were alive!!! And, as denise1 had pointed out, there were NOT 1000 in there - dead or alive! By this morning, another 50% died and my boy will only have enough thru tomorrow's breakfast (if I am lucky).

I am hatching out some silkie eggs but none yet. He will nibble on greens but know this is not sufficient. There is a pet store that actually has some 1/4" so I will have to go buy a bunch (at .10 each!) until the vendor comes through with replacement.

My question is: how easy is it to get babies (he's 2 months) to eat pellets? I was going to get some ZooMed (all that is available locally) but the guy at the store said he could never get ANY of his beardies to eat them. So before wasting more money (it's an expensive pet shop) on pellets I need to know if is too young to offer.

thank you!

lele

Sorry to hear about your dilemma. That sucks!

I've had great success in getting all my beardies to eat pellets. Especially the younger ones. As we all know, beardies are attracted to movement, and that's the key. Roll the pellets around in front of him and even try bouncing semi dry ones. I have one beardie that will gobble up every single pellet I "drop" in his cage. Even dry pellets, they bounce even higher! Just have fun with it and try to get him interested. If he's interested, he'll probably eat.

And if those ideas don't work, try mashing the pellets into a slurry and see if he will lick it off his nose. A lot of beardies love the taste of pellets and once they get the taste in their mouth they keep on licking.

Good luck lele. I feel so guilty! Here I am with about 2000 silkworms at my house. Lots of happy beardies here!

Hugs,
Veronica

hey, thanks for those tips, Veronica! Sounds like fun, I will get some and see what I can do. In the mean time I did contact reptilefood.com and they are shipping another 1000 crix overnight so I should be in better shape.

You can also try canned mini crix (thats what I did in the mean time waiting for crix shipments.)... they were about $5 for a can of 250. not too bad. My girl ate tons of them.

Good luck.

really? hmmm... I always wondered what the heck is on those things! How did you get her to eat them? I might get a can just to have on hand in case of emergency.

I put them on her greens. They have pretty pungent odor. She walked over, took some greens and had one...then it became her favorite. (you have to refrigerated them though)

I bought a small rubbermaid container and put all HER foods in them....I also bought Dragon Yummies...cant remember who makes them... its like dandelion greens and crickets in thick gelatin form...she likes them too although I have to cut it up for her.

Here is a recet picture.

I made it using this website as a guide:
http://www.geocities.com/borderviewdragons/harness1.html

They have pics of what it looks like I did changed it a little....instead of toggle, I use a small buckle from a "cheap" cat collar..that way it has a spot for a typical cat/small dog leash. I even found a small retractable leash for 99 cents.

I use old (or cheap) purses and the small drink cozies (the ones used for water bottles...not for 12 oz cans). Anything soft will work. I buy EVERYTHING at the 99cent stores. This particular collar was $2 and fits her perfectly. cant beat it. and only took me about 1/2 hour to sew and test (for strengh)

PS If you are going to make your little guy one...wait until he is about a year old. Unless you want several.
