Question getting young possibly newborn water snakes to feed?

aberlour Apr 13, 2005 02:28 PM

Here is the back-story late last week I rescued a young possibly newborn water snake from a cat while a few blocks from home. After completing a brief examination for lacerations, mites, ticks, and finding none I placed the snake in a 10-gallon tank to monitor it for any other problems.

Here is he question now after letting the snake accommodate itself to it new temporary housing I have been trying to get this snake to feed for the last half of this week. I have tried minnows, baby goldfish, live pinkies, dead pinkies, hatchling/ juvenile dusty salamanders, and red backed salamanders. I have had no luck getting this snake to eat any of them. While I know hatchling, snakes will often not eat until after their fist shedding I cannot be certain if that has happened yet. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this snake feeding?

Try putting the snake in a small container with water (lukewarm) that comes about halfway up the side of the snake. Find a small minnow and put it in there with the snake for a fw hours.

Welp, tried again 2 times today once in the morning and one time tonight with no luck. Decided to treat the little one like a wc off-feed python and picked it up and shoved a fish in its mouth then held its mouth shut till it swallowed it at least I know it had something to eat now.
