reptile relief for mites?

mistysprouse Apr 13, 2005 03:16 PM

So I checked with all the reptile stores around me and none of them carry pro-vent-a-mite which is my first choice(my friend used it for years and had great results). I haven't ever had mites in the 2 years I have had snakes but one snake has started sitting in the water bowl from time to time and has never done this in the past. The temps are fine in the cage and she isn't in shed. So I was just starting to check into the options in case it turns out to be mites. I will most likely have the pro-vent a mite shipped but I wondered how some of the other products worked in case I get in a pinch.

It's never too early to stock up on both Reptile Relief (RR) and Provent-A-Mite (PAM)!

I had a recent outbreak (small) of mites and I used both products. The combination works wonderfully, and I haven't seen a mite since!

PAM lasts about a month, but you can't use it directly on the animal (substrate only). RR only lasts a few days, but is gentle enough to apply directly on the animal. This is a great combo...IMHO. =)

Good Luck,
Chris

I'm new to BPs (three weeks). I don't have mites, and don't want to get them! Does anyone use either of these products on a regular "preventive" basis?

Thanks,
Ken

A lot of people do. In fact, Provent-A-Mite is marketed for "preventative" use.

I spray down my tubs with PAM at every cleaning - just to be on the safe side. I have a lot of freinds that are reptile owners that come over and handle my snakes, I also take them outside a lot and have a lot of rescues. You never know what they will pick up or what gets trasfered and it just keeps it from becoming an outbreak!

I've had 2 cases of mites (brought in by a new snake both times, obviously) since Reptile Relief came out. It was all I could find in pet stores too. I wanted to try it anyway because I read how gentle it is but I heard it doesn't work. I tried it anyway and got perfect results, in a short amount of time and it lasted forever. It took care of them after about 3 or 4 applications and that was just to make sure they were gone. You don't have to worry about it cause it's so gentle and it's so much easier than the whole PAM process. I always keep a bottle and use it occasionally for preventive measures. Just in case. Haven't seen a mite in almost a year but also haven't gotten any new snakes that were carrying them. Either way, it works.

Reptile Releif and Provent a Mite work in two different ways, both are good at what they do. The one mite incident that I had, I treated all my snakes with Reptile Relief and treated the tubs, racks, substrate, etc. with PAM and haven't seen a mite since. I also retreated after 2 weeks just to be on the safe side. The down side with using just Reptile Releif is that it only works on what it come in immediate contact with and it doesn't kill the eggs. PAM lasts longer, and kills the eggs. I would recommend using both. Hope this helps.

I heard this works well and has the same ingredients as PAM. You can get it from Wal Mart for 4-5 bucks a can.
