monitors eating fish

Emish Apr 13, 2005 08:37 PM

I went to one of my local petshops today and some guy said feeding savannah monitors fish stunts their growth . he then further told his father kept one in an area with a pond and it ate all of the fish and that he maxed only like 2 feet . he said it lived for five years and if i recollect right monitors do have long life spans . (longer than 5 years) so the short end of my question is does eating fish stunt the growth of monitors .

Monitors rely on the enviroment for support. If that support breaks or has gaps in it then they cannot reach their potential or it is atleast comprimised.

So if a food doesn't allow for proper growth then yes it can hold them back or slow growth rates. Alot of other factors come into play though temps., humidity, etc.

I grow Tilapia in a controlled tank system. Ive found fish to be excellent, the only problem i found was they dont seem to like them as much as mice/rats. Mine will go after rats first then the fish. I put the fish live (weight close to a pound) in there pools, they swim after the fish. They get a much better workout with the fish, somtimes takes a few minutes for them to get them. Reminds me of lions running after gazelle or somthing. The stool doesnt come out all runny like you might expect either.

Not trying to pick on you or anything I am just curious.

What have you found fish to be good for? Have you grown monitors by feeding only fish? What was the outcome?

If you mean they eat it and look as if they like it , well mine will eat alot of stuff and appear to be enjoying themselves.
