I could not find the other tank pictures on the I turn rocks web site. I copied and pasted the link and it come up with reptiles but no tanks Can you tell me where on that site they are?

its just the same page youve been to before, when you go to iturnrocks.com, then scroll to the bottom and click on Photos of my home tanks or use the link at the bottom of this post.

Here is a pic of what I plan for my new hood to look like. Except for the color, it will match the stand and there will be lights and stuff. But I think the slant front/top with plexiglass window will be nice for viewing basking turtles.

I pasted it on a photo of my tank for perspective.

Have you considered constructing it completely out of plexi? You'd see them even better, and it'd be thinner than the wood (less bulky looking on top). You certainly seem handy enough to work with plexi and some bracketing for holding it together. If you want to hide the lights in it, you can paint the plexi inside or out where the lights are to cover it...

just a thought.

that has been reccomended to me by someone else. The only plexi I have available is 1/4" and the tank is 5 feet long. I feel that it would be too flimsy and although I will be using plexi in my filter and some other stuff, im not completely confident with my plexi abilities yet. Im pretty good with wood tho, and maybe sometime in the future Ill try that, but for now, Ill stick with what I know.

I've seen someone using thin plexi like the 1/4" or thinner, but with this metal corner material. The metal is like a long corner and has holes all along it for attaching it. Anyway, the metal was pretty rigid.

Just an idea. I get wary of wood with hoods after having them rot on me. I suppose it's pretty easy to make a new one when the first one rots, but I'm always trying to think of new ways of doing things. I also figure a nice open and tall hood like that would be cool for being basically a greenhouse basking area on top of the water area. Normally I just use flat lids and put lights on top of them and lower the water level so the tank is not full and acts as the walls above water level.

The key to lasting wood hoods is polyuerethane. Lots of coats. I think in my 120 I will poly the driftwood too. Here is a photo of how its coming along. Still need hood, lights, basking area, filter, better heater, and more water. The baby snapping turtle is hanging out with a couple fish in there for now. I built an old style corner filter for temporary filtering, until the 20 gallon is finished. Wanted to get some bacteria growing before Im all done.
