Tips on getting a youngin to eat

kingofspades Apr 14, 2005 12:24 AM

Ok, so Eve is REALLY young, as in I think she still has an imbilical "scar"
How would I go about getting her to eat?
I tried putting her in a deli container with live pinkies, but she just ignored them.
Any tips?
Thanks in advance.

By "live pinkies", I assume you are referring to pinky mice. If so, that may well be your problem right there. Pinky mice are far to small for a baby BP. Their size and relative lack of movent do not interest your baby. You may not think so, but your baby can take a "hopper" sized baby mouse, about 3 weeks of age. I have found that some baby BPs are intimidated by the hoppers, so I start them with what I call "crawlers". Try and find some that are somewhere around two weeks old. Their eyes are just opening up, they have a good coat of fur, and are able to crawl about timidly. Try to find some dark in color....they seem to work better than white ones at first. After two or three meals on these, progress to hoppers, then small adult mice a couple of weeks later.

I would try rats fuzzies - mostly because they are good size and they move around just enough to be entising to the snake but not so much that they freak the snake out. Put the rat fuzzie in a brown grocery type bag with the snake close it up tight and leave them in there together for a while. It may take several hours, but it's always worked for me. You can also use a small box or even a pillow case. If she just won't eat and is starting to look lethargic you can try assisted feeding which is basically putting the p/k rat's head in her mouth and let her feeding instinct take over, but use that as a last resort. Hope this helps.
