bumps on snake continued

reuben Apr 14, 2005 09:06 AM

First, thanks to Kel on the informative reply to my earlier post.(April 11, cornsnake forum)
Second, progress report:
I took the snake to a vet who took a sample of the fluid within the blisters and checked for bacteria or White blood cells on slides. He also prescribed a 20-day regimen of fairly dilute antibiotics.
The slides showed nothing apart from excess sub-cutaneus fluid. Following Kel's post I asked if he saw fat cells, but he said no, that it resembled a blister. He suspects humidity issues in the enclosure, but still reccommends I continue with the antibiotic treatment.
In conclusion, I know what it isn't but not what it is. Will hope the blisters go away in time, but am fearful regarding the disease Kel mentioned in her post of April 11.
The snake seems fit, otherwise, and is going into shed.
Let's hope for the best.

Thanks for the update Reuben.

When my first one developed fat lumps, my vet also aspirated to get a fluid sample. That came back negative for everything as well.

I'd be inclined to think that if it was a humidity blister, then something bacterial or fungal should have shown up on the slide. If it is a blister, I wonder if the vet could have completely aspirate it so that it goes down? Anyone out there have info on humidity problems? Not something I've encountered.

The antibiotics are a reasonable precaution. As you say, sometimes it can be a relief knowing what it isn't. At least you can discount mites or other pests.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes.
