100% Het Pied Question

Slamdaccord96 Apr 14, 2005 01:54 PM

I recently bought a pair of 100% het pieds which were sold with a genetics guarantee. When they arrived they came with 2 certificates stating that if bred they were guaranteed to produce pieds by their 2nd clutch. With that came a picture listing of all the babies in that clutch (10 total which seems like a lot). It seemed strange to me that none of their siblings were pied since I thought the only way to get a 100% het pied was by breeding a pied x 100% het. Maybe I am wrong, but does it seem like I got scammed according to the genetics factor? Any comments/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

you get 100% het pied by breeding a pied to a normal - none of the offspring would be pied, they would all be 100% ers. If you bred a pied to a 100% het pied you would get a pied and 66%ers.

Tosha is smoking crack. Don't listen to her. She obviously never got her morning coffee. =)

Come to think of it my morning coffee is still sitting here untouched and probably cold by now. But most likely I'm still on an Angolan rush.

Think about it...

Piebald X Heterozygous Piebald equals 66% Hets??? The Piebald is a homozygous. =)

Sorry toshamc, but if you breed a pied to a 100% het pied, on average, half will be pied and the other have will be 100% het...NOT 66% possible het. You get 66er's by breeding het to het.

Just out of curiousity...who did you buy your hets from Sarah? Who produced them?

You can also get 100% Hets from a Piebald X Normal breeding.

Hmm...I seem to recall a certain "breeder" whose genetic guarantee shows all the clutch siblings. Makes you wonder...

Good Luck,
Chris

There are two ways to get 100% chance het pied babies (you could also prove many types of possible hets to be a het by breeding but then it would have to be an adult).

The non-pieds from homozygous pied X heterozygous pieds would be 100% hets. They got the pied gene from the homozygous pied parent because it didn't have a normal to give and obviously got the normal gene from the het parent or they would be homozygous pied. However, it would be unlikely to get 10 hets and no pieds from breeding a het pied X homozygous pied (99.90% chance of that NOT happening).

Most likely the clutch of ten 100% chance het pieds where from homozygous pied X a nice big normal. They each got the pied gene from the homozygous pied parent and the normal gene from the normal parent.
