I'm getting worried about my gravid female. I need some help please

Nicoleo Apr 14, 2005 03:39 PM

I've seen my male and female breed and I know that she's gravid from the way that she's been acting. Her eating has dropped off a lot. She won't eat crickets at the moment and she'll maybe eat one or two pieces of carrot a day if I'm lucky. I gave her a container to lay her eggs in but she's not interested in it all she wants to do is dig everywhere but the place I gave her to lay her eggs. I don't know what to do and I'm leaving in two weeks to go visit my family for three weeks. I'm going to have someone babysit them but I want to make sure that she'll be fine before I leave and that I won't come back to a dead beardie. I don't want to take her to the vet for them to tell me that she's going to lay eggs because I already know that. If someone could give me some suggestions as to what else to do I'd really appreciate it because I'm out of ideas. This is my first time dealing with a pregnant reptile so I really have no idea what I'm doing Yes I have an incubator and someone to watch the eggs while I'm gone if she lays them before I leave. Thanks for any help

I suggest making a separate laying bin for her to lay. When she is ready to lay digging and scratching the bottom of the cage, and in the corners take her out of her cage and put her into a large size Rubbermaid bin with a top soil/sand mixture. I put in plenty of soil and moisten it till I can pack it into a corner making a slope. In the side of the slope I start a hole for the females to tunnel into. Most of my females will use the hole I started but I have had 1 or two that made their own. Most of my females when ready to lay go right to work as soon as I put them in digging and clearing out a hole. if they are not ready to lay at that time they'll be more interested in getting out then digging and I just take them out and try the next day. I use a clamp light to get the soil warm enough for her to lay her eggs

Different dragon then above, but this pic shows how they dig a big enough hole to go in head first turn around in the hole and lay the eggs. Make sure you have enough soil for them.

Thank you for the advice. I'll definatly look into doing that since she's digging all over the place. She's been digging under everything but hasn't laid any eggs yet. I'm hoping that she'll lay them soon. I'll let everyone know when she does.
