AfterCare for gravid Panther female

redoaksblues Apr 14, 2005 05:28 PM

Hello, I have a year old female Gravid Nosey-Be female. She is doing wonderful and should lay her first clutch in a week or so. She is still eathing and drinkig well. I have read numerous opinions regarding aftercare after laying eggs for Veiled chams..etc...but cannot find any info for beautiful female panther chams...it has been suggested to spray her externally with a vitamin spray...put (I forgot the name) some type of gel containing electrolytes and calcium on her lips for her to lick to stimulate her appetite back.........any suggestions would be deeply appreciated!

I would stay away from anything called "vitamin spray". You don't want anything foreign in delicate chameleon eyes. Also, if your female is healthy going into laying, believe me, she won't need any stimulant to get her appetite back--it'll be there, no problem. You can mist her gently with normal mist water (no fancy additives) to clean her a bit, and give her an instant drink, as she'll be thristy. A female that has recently laid knows she is in a weak and vulnerable position, so really offering food and water, and then just leaving her alone, is really the best thing you can do, for the immediate post-laying time. Avoid the temptation to fuss; she will have just completed an exhausting task and will want to recuperate quietly on her own. As good as your intentions are, the added stress of you "fussing" with her (ie, gel on lips) will only add to her stress levels. As stated, if she's healthy, she'll eat and drink readily. Offer her a variety of foods, a little more spraying than usual, and let her be, until she eats and drinks.

Gravid Veiled care is not much different than Panther care.

Thank you. To tell you the truth..that was my original plan of action but then of course I read way too many things and of course became immediately paranoid. She is very healthy and has had the proper calcium and minerals. Thank you again!

I wouldn't recommend any kind of spray either...my female Tamatave panther has laid 3 clutches so far without any problems after laying. I would recommend after she lays her clutch, let her finish covering them up and after she is completely done, take her out of the incubation chamber mist her very well, provide a dripper with pedialyte and let her rest! The next day provide her with gutloaded insects dusted with Repcal calcium with d3 and herptivite. Provide her with these dusted crickets every day for a week, then go back to your usual dusting and feeding schedule. This has worked for me...hope this helps! And good luck!

Pedialite? Just childrens pedialite? Do I dilute it with water? This is soooo exciting. I am fortunate she is so healthy. She is getting bigger and her appetite is slowing...they said they lay after about 21 days so next Friday I begin the "not watching" watch.....

Thanx for responding.

P.S. I read your comments about genetics (I think it was you..) white lips versus yellow...well I can at least contribute...I have a yellow lipped male bred with a white lipped female and visa versa on the second pair...it will be interesting to see who carries the dominant gene...the males or the females or if it is an equal mix...

Yes, just Pedialyte...the non-flavor one and don't dilute it.

Keep me posted when they hatch out later...it will be interesting to see what the ratio will be of white/yellow lipped.
