Breeding and keeping of BCC (namely suris)- difficulty vs BCI.

stevodod Apr 14, 2005 09:05 PM

Hey,

I'm an experienced snake keeper thinking about getting a suri or two for an eventual breeding project. I've seen some absolutely beautiful wild caught suri's and some great babies on the classifieds lately. I was wondering...

How hard is a wild caught specimen to keep?

How hard are any suri's to breed?

How long do must suri's get?

Thanks for any input!

Just got done with my snake room and am making plans for caging!

Steve

1) Wild caughts can be tricky, but some act almost CB. I wouldn't recommend them though. There are true CBB animals are available from quality breeders at fair prices. There is no reason to gamble with WCs. You will have a much more enjoyable animal if you go with CB. Less problems=more fun.

2)True Redtails are more difficult to breed than BCI, but they are not impossible. Rob Tudehope has had a litter every year from YEARS. I wouldn't say anyone has it totally down, as everyone gets slugs or nothing every once in awhile. They are not a walk in the park, but worth it.

3)Suris get pretty big. Most people have fairly young animals 5-6 year adults. Those are definitely not full grown. With more time, I would expect 8ft plus from females easy. My biggest is a true 10-11ft......

Suris are my favorite snakes out there, hands down. If you get true captive born and bred animals from a good source, you will love them. They are great snakes, and there is no other substitute.

I also think that suris are the best snakes, hands down.
