Sick/Parasite Infected?

howitser Apr 14, 2005 09:59 PM

Ok, I'm pretty much deducing that my crested has some type of parasite problem or other medical condition. It hardly eats, even if I try with baby food in a syringe I can't get it to eat more than a few licks. It ignores crickets in the cage, only way to get it to eat one is to use tweezers & keep it basically on it's nose until it licks it for a while. I can't get a fecal sample, I don't think I've seen it go, the one time I did it was mainly liquid with some white stuff.

Is there a basic remedy/product I can try? It doesn't appear malnourished or anything, basically it's just very lethargic and doesn't want to eat. If it keeps up this way I will find a vet to go to, just thought I could try something else first.

I did pick up a second crested from PetSmart, it's roaming around, going after the crickets, so I can't see any problems with the temps or presentation.

Thanks!

Howard

if you have put the two of them together in the same cage, and the one is indeed affected by the parasite that Allen has posted a link regarding information for, then you will need to treat BOTH animals. best of luck, post more if u have more problems, or solve the problems.

Yeah, they are housed together, so I do realize that if it's some kind of infection/infestation or whatever they'll both need to be treated. I was looking at ParaZap, that way I can just try to feed them normally and also get rid of the parasites. Although now I'm not sure what's up with the one crested. I did see it drinking water this morning from the dish in the cage, and now it's in the humid shed box I've had in there. Maybe it's just getting ready to shed, and hasn't eaten because of it?

I'll update if there's changes....

There is no reason to play with ParaZap when a known treatment is available to you (i.e. Flagyl). Even if the product works as "claimed", it doesn't mention any use or efficacy in the treatment of amoebas.

If there are visible signs of weight loss with slow lethargic movements (and in later stages a swollen vent area) - then you need to act. You simply can't confuse it with a few days of fasting when in a shed cycle.
