Hey guys, got a baby ig from a friend and he's in BAD shape.. Need some pointers on getting healthy!

tor038505 Apr 14, 2005 10:19 PM

Ok, as it is right now I can see every bone in his body. He's alert, but not active at all. He always has his eyes closed, i think it's because he doesn't have enough energy to keep them open. I was wondering if I could make some pedilite or whatever and maybe give it to him somehow... When he blinks his entire head moves showing he has no fat whatsoever. Any help on getting him healthy and not bone skinny would be appreciated in any way. Right now I have collard greens, red bell peppers, whole wheat bread, papaya, mustard greens, and watermelon as his salad. He has fresh water since he's been here, good UVB, and a basking temp of about 94. I have him in a pretty small cage right now as I wasn't ready to get him and it was all I have but i'm in the process of making a dual cage setup for both my igs now.

thanks everyone,
Justin

i would up his temps a little.

i tried to help one like this lasy year and most of the times they dont make it so dont get attached.

mist him very often keep the humidity up.

run all of his food thru the food processor and make it real small..

i had to feed mine by hand every day twice a day and it took a while but he ended up getting strong and he ate on his own.
..
the thing is is that most of the time when they are like this it is to late to help.. post back it you need more help...

Thanks for the info. I just got home from work and I have him in a pretty warm tub filled about 4 inches and he's been drinking the water going on 5 minutes now. He is one thirsty guy! Now i'm positivte dehydration is the cause for 90% of deaths from unknowing owners. I went to the pet store today and he has 2 igs and one i had to heal his tail because it got caught, they look really bad. But I don't have the money to buy them both. =- Well, on a better note. He's been eating ALOT of the salad i'm giving him. I don't have to cut it into small pieces like you said, cause he demolishes it without a hassle, thankfully! I'll up his temps, what do you suggest? 110 basking? I don't want to go too high cause the ambient temp in my room is prob 91 or so. All my animals seem to enjoy it alot.

If he is eating and drinking that is a GREAT sign. Keep it going! Make sure to supplement his food and keep soaking him. Bring a fecal sample to the vet as soon as one is available, just in case.

Also, i may have misinterperted but you said you were making a dual cage for both igs. If you are talking about putting this ig in with another i wouldn't do that. At least until he has been quantined for a long time and is completely back on his feet.

Sounds like you are doing a good job, good luck!

you dont have to go as high as 110. i would say around 100 would be good. this will help him build strength fatser and will help him if he has any paratsites. also when he is healthier(sp) i would bring him in to the vet to get checked just to make sure he doesnt have any parasites and such. and he may also have MBD so make sure you give him calcium and other vitamins.

I've started supplementing his food. No, i wouldn't dare put two igs in the same cage. Female/male or not. I was going to build 1 BIG cage and split it in half so I wouldn't have 2 seperate cages to move around. He's on my keyboard right now and he's sucking in his... sac. Is that a mating ritual? I'm not too sure. Haven't had much experience with that, just the bad attitude. Thanks for all the information guys.

95 is all he needs for basking. In the wild they never get hotter than that. Inland lizards do. give him an 85 F. spot to. Your little guy sounds like he really has the will to live.

In the near future, he should be tested and treated for intestinal parasites.
