still hasnt eaten

raisnok Apr 15, 2005 04:37 AM

its been over 10 days and my corn still has not eaten.
i thought he was shedding, i dont see that he has.
then i noticed the frozen mice i bought had a bad smell, so i fifgured that was why he had refused. i got my mice from the moouse factory, no smell, he still refused.
could the bad pinkie have cause him not to want to eat frozen ones?
the other question i have is right before any of this happened, i had spot cleaned hiis tank, and didnt put everything back in the same way, could that have been it?

Don't worry quite yet. Remind me....Is this a baby corn? I am guessing YES since we're talking pinkies. Don't try to feed him EVERY day...That will just stress him out. If he looked like he was going into shed...He still may be. They cloud up, clear up, then shed. If he is not going into shed, then try this: Cut the head off a pinky. Put the decapitated body and the head in a deli cup or very small container of some kind. Squeeze the head a little so that some of the brain goo oozes out the neck area (YUM!). Put your snake in with these items and give him a little while to check them out. I have found with many reluctant young snakes that this can really stimulate them to chow down. If it works, use it as a feeding method the next several times, then gradually switch back to whole pinks (still using the deli cup method if needed). Good luck. Duffy

I'll agree to do what Duffy suggested, but to elaborate a little more on what he said about how often you're trying to feed him, i'd wait about 4-5 days. dont even touch him, dont open the cage except to change the water. That'll help him calm down if it is stres keeping him from eating.

yes its a baby corn.... i havent tried to feed him everyday, every 7 days after 2 times of refuseing i waited til yesterday, he still hasnt eaten, should i wait 10 more days?
im not freaking out, i figured he would have ate something by now though, he was eating good.
i am not sure if he is fixing to shed, i am not sure as this is my first snake.

You don't have to wait 10 days...or even 7. If he sheds, for example, you could offer him food later that day or perhaps the next. Otherwise, you could try offering him food every 3 or 4 days if you like. Try the decapitated pinky thing and let me know if he goes for it.

Don't worry...We ALL became concerned the first few times our first few snakes went without eating. Now...If they eat, they eat...If they don't they don't. I still try different things for "problem eaters"...switching prey (usually "downsizing" for a larger problem eater), an occasional decapitation for a little one. When they are "blue" or "cloudy-eyed" I don't even bother thawing food for them any more, although I have a few that will eat others' leftovers whether they are in shed or not. Good luck...Your snake will be just fine. Duffy

You're really going to freak in a year from now when he decides not to eat for 3 or 4 months. Be patient, you've been given good advice by the previous posters.
