How do you guys keep your Taiwans?

lovelyleopards Apr 15, 2005 10:52 AM

What size cage, rack, or other do you guys keep them in? I'm getting ready to purchase new enclosures for 1.1. I'll probably go with a Vision or comparable. Don't flame me for this, but does anyone keep an adult pair together? If so, how large is the cage, and have you seen any stress issues? Thanks!

My Taiwan lives in a 4'x2'x17.5" Boaphile cage. He's about 7.5 foot long and uses every bit of the space. I've found that Taiwans are active, inquisitive, snakes and if I had the room, I'd have a larger enclosure with more climbing space (vertical). They grow fast in their first few years, so if you're buying hatchlings, be prepared to move up in cage sizes.

All of my snakes are caged separately, I find it easier to monitor their health and feed them when they're only one to a cage. With my Taiwan, he's such an avid feeder, I really need to watch him. As soon as I bring a rat into the room, he's immediately looking for the prey item and has launched himself out of the cage to get it (and that's why I use long hemostats to offer rats to him). I don't know that I'd want to be trying to dodge 2 hungry snakes when I opened the cage door!

I keep my pair seperate during the better part of the year, exept for when breeding of course. Their enclosures are pretty close in size to 55 gallon aquariums. With lamps, decent water bowls, and hide boxes. Pretty basic, but it works darn good.

I keep 1.1 Taiwans in separate 260 gallon Reptarium cages. The 260g Reptarium measures 72 high x 30 wide x 30 deep [meas.in inches]. I have climbing branches, live plants, two water bowls and hide spots in the top half and bottom of the cages. Each cage also has a misting nozzle hooked up to a misting system that sprays them twice a day Mon-Fri for 5 minutes each cycle. Flourescent 4 foot two bulb fixture provides the lighting above each cage along with a 150 watt infrared incandescent for winter localized basking spot - no basking spot in summer. These cages have worked fairly well for me, but I'm going to be retiring them in the next few months in favor of more sturdy cages that I'll construct myself. On another note, I would house yours separately. As was already mentioned, the feeding response is incredible with these guys. I housed mine together initially, but ended up separating them at about 1 1/2 years of age because it was getting too difficult to keep them apart during feeding.
