false bottom?

rattler_mt Apr 15, 2005 12:34 PM

im new to darts, so new i dont have any yet. im going to get 2 azureus and 2 suri cobalt tincs from a local breeder. the azureus will be ready in 3 months so im going to start setting up my large planted tank now, give time for moss to spread ect. i realize they will need smaller tanks for awhile till they gain some size. thats not a problem. i am planing a divided tank, tincs in one side, azureus in the other. my problem is that i think the bottom is tempered glass. is it feasible to knock out the bottom and replace it with a plexi one i can drill holes in? or am i better off buying a new tank? im trying to avoid having to use a sump to pump out water. i would rather have it drain its self into a 5 gal bucket fo reasier removal.

also if i split the tank exactly in half(the tank is 48 inches long, by 15 wide by 18 high) how many frogs can i put in a side?

The rule of thumb is one frog per 5 gallons, but you must keep in mind that tincs and azureus (really just another tinc morph) do not do well in group and will fight.

If the bottom is tempered, I would say you should get rid of the tank. You can ship it to me and I will dispose of it.

Just kidding. You can either hide a tube in the false bottom which you can use to siphon out water out of the false bottom, or drill a hole in the side of the tank near the bottom and just drain it from there. However, a pump with a waterfall is very nice and I heard is a prerequisite for breeding azureus. It adds a lot of humidity too.

I would suggest against drilling into ANY aquarium(if that's what you are using) You have to be precise, and unless you have drilled glass before, you need a diamond-tip drill bit. What I used in my 20 gal long false bottom is a piece of pvc pipe with a cap on it. When the water builds up too much, you can use a turkey baster to siphon out the water. My 55 Paludarium will have a waterfall, I am also thinking of getting some Azures
