What does this mean????

kevinBD1 Apr 15, 2005 03:37 PM

I went to check on the beardie i am getting, and i noticed him sort of making a coughing noise. I looked in his mouth and there was a good bit of saliva, but his mouth was pink or normal coloration. And also i know that when they get too hot they open their mouths to thermoregulate, but i am pretty sure the temps are good. Could it be a mild respiratory infection?? everything else is normal, still eating fine(like a pig) and eyes are bright, nothing i noticed around the nostrils or vent...

Hi
you have a humit meter?
it could be its to moist above the 60 % it can cause respiration faulures.
try to get it between the 30-60 %
if he stil make that noise aftet you rearagned the climate i would advice to seek a vet.
opening muoth under baskinglight is normal atleast if he have a cool side to go to.

There is no humidity gauge in his cage right now at the pet store, but i seriously doubt it is humidity because he is on sand, and a wire top on the cage, and only a very very small water dish. And it is mainly when he is under the lamp, and when i pick him up, but its not aggression i dont think, does the amount of saliva have to do with anything?

Pin worms will make a dragon cough. If you do get this dragon then you need to have a fecal done.Pin worms are easy to treat.

I would recommend looking for a local breeder and buy from him or her instead. Petstores don't always know how to properly take care of reptiles. The fact it is obvious suffering from something, whether it's respiratory infection or pinworms, and you are already paying more than the dragon is worth at a petstore, it will cost you more in vet bills to get him fixed up.

You could tell what you learned here to the petstore owner, maybe he will get it vet inspected and treat any ailment first, before selling it to you. At least this way, you know for sure he is healthy.

It might be an infection but my female likes to make blowing noises. I make blowing noises at my dog and she never did it until she heard me making the noises at my dog. Plus she likes to puff up real big until there's so much air that it comes out the side of her mouth so maybe it's something the beardie heard and picked up on. I tend to mimic my animals because it creates trust so I think she mimics me because I mimic her. Its really cute actually lol.

thats more along the lines of what i am thinking, because i got a friend or mine that has been working w/ them for years and years to look at him, and she said "there is a little bit of extra saliva, but i dont think its anything to worry about." So i am just gonna keep an eye on him. And he does it mainly when i have him out, so maybe he is just trying to look big and bad.

I would be carful. Excess saliva usually means there is a problem going on.It is one of the things a vet will look for when examining a beardie for a physical.

If you do decide to get this beardie you shuld make a vet appointment for him before you even bring him home. Get the vet appointment for as soon as possible and bring a fecal sample with you
