good reptile(s) for a 10-gallon tank?

tevans Apr 15, 2005 07:22 PM

I have a 10-gallon tank that will be collecting dust soon, and wonder if there are any reptiles that would be comfortable living in a tank that small. I searched thru other posts, and saw some similar... lizards mentioned were anoles & geckos. I'm looking for details, as to if I could keep a pair of something comfortably in there. I have this thing where I try to get pairs when comes to reptile pets I'd prefer something that likes or tolerates humidity, as they'd be kept in same room w/ my basiliks and their humidifier.

Hm, the humidity levels reduce your options a bit. Otherwise, I would have said that a pair of banded geckos would work out well in that size tank.

As it is...you're looking at very tiny species. It would be ok for a single anole or house gecko, but a bit crowded for a pair. Many of the smaller reptiles are more active, thus require more room to roam.
You could think outside the box, and set up a few fire-bellied toads.

you could keep a leo gecko in their possibly a pair.

No, he could not--first off, while a single leo might be kept in a 10 gallon tank, a pair could not.

And he can't keep a leo, because the humidity level will be too high. Leos are desert species.

Humidity isn't extreme in the room, ranges from 60-80 depending on how dry it is outside, usually on the 60 side (basilisk cage stays bit higher).

Frogs hold no interest for me. I'd briefly thought of a snake, but don't think even a corn snake would be happy in that small of a tank for long.

I've seen one lizard recently in a local pet store called a Curly tailed lizard... haven't done any research yet, but he was rather small size... and cute So far it seems a pair of anoles or small house geckos would be ok? Any other ideas? I've got plenty of time to research and choose, as my female bassie is still getting well and I'm keeping her in there for a few more weeks most likely.

Thanks for the suggestions btw

60 to 80 is great for basilisks, but it's too high for desert species.

As for the anoles I would not put a pair in a tank that small. A good guide for anole care is Under the Leaves. Maybe you could do a single anole. Even then the website Under the Leaves suggests that one anole have a twenty gallon. I currently have two in a fifty gallon but that is larger than minimum.
