What's the safest thing to use to mark the 'up' side of an egg? Have heard some things can be toxic . Thanks.

For my chameleon eggs I use something that isn't liquid like chalk or a pencil. Markers soak into the egg and pens won't write on them very well. I haven't ever done anything to my python eggs. I don't think it really matters but I could be wrong. I don't rotate mine out of habit and caution anyway.
