Help! I need pinheads and/or FF ASAP...but...m

trinacliff Jul 10, 2003 03:58 PM

I can't find anything locally, my FF culture seems like it's on it's last leg, and my other crix are already too big for my new LITTLE Pygmy cham (she's only 3 or 4 months old). The crix I have started out as pinheads, but most are too big for her. I didn't know JUST how tiny she was going to be. Locally, I found someone that SAID they sold pinheads, so I thought I was all set...but, WOW, were they wrong. Now I have a problem.

Anyone know of anyone that will overnight something to me? I had to repo my horse today, or I would have ordered earlier...I didn't realize I was going to run into this problem of them not shipping after Thursday.

Thanks!!!
Kristen

that I did order some FF a few days ago, but for some reason I found out today that they won't ship until Monday...WHAT? I have no idea why...I'm frustrated because I thought I had everything under control and now I'm screwed.

Kristen, any local chain pet store (as much as we may abhor some of them!) should have fruit fly cultures for about $5.

Ed's Fly Meat will ship overnight (below) and they are in WA so you have some time. You can also try
Call timberline http://www.timberlinefisheries.com/
or the Drosophila Company: http://www.drosophila.herpetology.com/ and see if they will overnight them to you. Most places only ship thru Wed. or Thursday b/c they can't guarantee they'll arrive alive if stuck in a PO over a weekend.

I would recommend (at some point) getting a culture kit so you can keep a constant supply going (I got mine from Timberline). espcially once those little guys hatch!

let me know how you make out!

Kristen,

If you need them you can order the pinhead sizes from Lucky Lure this morning and they will arrive tomorrow. They have about 6 differnet pin head sizes. If you need to go with the smallest so they will grow a little while and last you that would be your best bet. Their tiniest is dust pin which are very small. Their sizes are dust pin,sm pin, pin, large pin, small small and I think there are a few others in that size range. Most pet store call their smalls pin head when they are in fact usually only 1/4" crickets. Also if I remember correctly you are not that far from Lucky lure and could go by and pick them up in person if you wanted to.

Kristen-

I don't know where you live, but you will need to order from a cricket farm. The pet shops that sell crickets online order once or twice a week feeders after they get your order then ship them out. You should try www.reptilefood.com call them and see what they can do for you. I have never ordered from them but they do ship next day. I also keep pygmy chameleons (1.2 Rhampholeon uluguruensis) but I breed my own food for them from the adult crickets I feed to my pardalis locales. I order 1000 crickets at a time and put a small container of dirt in the bottom of the container for the females to lay eggs in. I change it out every few days to a week depending on the size of the container. The container of eggs are put in a shoe box and sprayed with water (high humidity is key) put the lid on and incubated at room temp. The eggs hatch in 3-4 weeks and I have 1000's of little pinheads. I leave them in the plastic shoe box with the lid on for at least one week after they hatch and turn from a clear/gray color to a light brown. Feed them the same as you would any crickets just smaller amounts. After they change color I put them in a bucket with eggs crate or an 18gal tub with egg crate. Just feed the crickets and then feed the crickets out as needed. It saves me allot of money and is easy to do. Hope this helps!

I ordered FF and 1/16" crix (wow, those must be SMALL!) from them, and they will be here tomorrow AM. Thanks again!

...I checked out their site and I like that they have smaller orders of crix. I'll be interested to hear if they are truly 1/16."

re: FF You may still consider to do the FF kit from Timberline (others may offer it, too) so YOU control what you have going! The culture is dry and you just add water and yeast. They supply everything but the water and yeast LOL!

I forgot to reply above...thanks for the suggestion. I will probably do that down the road...once I get in a routine and can add FF maintainence to the list...LOL.

I'll let you know what size they really are...that's why I did order the smallest...since I'm not so sure they'll actually be that small.

Take care!
