Burying Eggs?......

jtrott Apr 16, 2005 10:43 AM

I had my first clutch yesterday, and I was wondering. I have always seen people with eggs sitting on top of the perlite/vermiculite mixture. I am using 100% perlite. Should I bury the eggs about 50%, or just sit them on top of the perlite? I currently have them buried 50%, should I change that?

Either way will work as long as they can not roll around. I use straight perlite last year, worked great but i did not bury them.
Good luck and congrats on the eggs.

I guess I will keep them buried, and see how it goes.

Thanks for the congrats.

among other reasons....
1) you can't monitor eggs you can't see,
2) risk of drowning or over-hydrating eggs
good luck and have fun...

You say to leave them, which is 50% buried, but then you say that I can't monitor eggs I can't see. Shoud I uncover them and just set them on the surface of the perlite, or leave them 50% buried?

If you are using just Perilite, I see no reason to cover the eggs. Just use them as a medium to keep them off the water when using the no substrate method. If you want a substrate, use Perilite mixed with Vermiculite.
