I finally made a caging decision

Eric East Apr 16, 2005 03:05 PM

After months of debating, I finally came to the conclusion that I could build cages considerably cheaper than purchasing them.
The only real incentive to purchasing was the weight of the cages & the more I thought about it I decided that just wasn't a good enough reason.

Last night I went out and purchased most of the materials need to build my cages. I decided on melamine mostly due to the cost and ease of cleaning. Yeah, I know the cages will weigh a ton!

I spend most of the day today working on them and they are for the most part done. I just need to figure out how i'm going to do the glass.

Anyway, the cages are 5' x 2' x 18". I know many of you suggest 6' and over cages but, I just don't have the space and had to do something. Excluding the glass or plexi I have only $95 in 2 cages. When complete it will be close to $200 but that beats the heck out of purchasing. The cheapest cages I found were the 4 x 2 11.5" boaphile cages & they want $219 each for them!

I'll post pics when they are completed.

God bless!

Good luck with cages. Suggestion - for ventilation drill holes and insert round aluminum soffit vents. Two or three inch diameter size, closer to the top than the bottom of cage, should be fine. Insert them on the inside surface, facing in.

I would suggest sliding glass for the openings. You can buy the track at the same shops you purchase your glass. I would use some thick glass too. It'll be more insulative and less likely to break.

Making your own cages is a less expensive way to go and you can put in as many bells as whistles as you want.

Good luck (no, there's nothing foreboding about that either)
