Brian Smith, need advice...

terdball Jul 10, 2003 04:13 PM

I need to know how I too can own sooo many snakes, take good care of them(feeding, cleaning, breeding etc.), and manage to find enough time to post over forty times in less than a week on the forums. I will settle for nothing but the best for my snakes thus being "hands on" for my collection and not relying on or trusting anyone else with my snakes. Please tell me how you do it. Much obliged.

Well, it's mainly the systems I have in place that help to save time. But also I don't have a job to have to go to, so I have all day every day to take care of my snakes, the rabbit colonies, the rat colonies (both quite extensive), over 100 additional pet reptiles and animals (including but not limited to: Tortoises, gators, iguanas, water dragons, dogs, cats, vietnamese pot bellied pigs, and others). I also have a lot of help from my "other half", my wife. She's my partner and helper in everything. But all in all, I'd say that we work less than 2 hours each day. (not straight through, but 10 minutes here, 20 there, etc)

Hope this helps. What all do you have to take care of? Maybe I can help out with a few suggestions. Like we break our duties into different days of the week. That always helps a lot.

Wow, LESS than two hours a day on hundreds of animals? I spend that much time on about thirty snakes. How many animals do you care for overall?

BrianSmith Jul 10, 2003 05:14 PM

Not sure, really. It's been a long time since I have counted. But over 130 snakes alone (the number always changes almost daily). But it's the systems I have in place that really help out a lot. Like on Sunday, for example.... we wash every water bowl in a bleach/antibacterial solution. We have over 130 bowls down to about 1 hour. My rooms are structured for easy mobility, easy cage access, and my work station is on wheels and rolls as we work. Before I made the rolling work station (which is also outfitted with stacks of newspapers, supplies, and water pitchers, etc) half that amount of bowls would take twice that long. My cage designs are also designed around making the work easier. The entire front of every cage opens so that one can reach any part.

What is your layout like? What kinds of cages do you have? And what species of boids do you keep? It all makes a difference, believe it or not.

Small snake room, four walls of cages(many Boaphile), easy access. I just can't imagine being able to personally take care of hundreds of animals, snakes and others, in less than two hours a day. You are obviously either a magician or an octopus, lol.

BrianSmith Jul 10, 2003 05:52 PM

Lol,.. no, not either of those, ha ha. It's like I was trying to explain, it's my systems. Take for example our rat facility (converted garage) and our rabbit colonies,..... We run over 600 breeder female rats at a 10 to 1 ratio (female to male),.. broken into six seperate breeding tanks each containing roughly 100 females to 10 males. In addition to this, we are raising many hundreds of "Waver Rats" as I call them, for future snake food. I pull "pregos" as I call them, every Thursday and Sunday. I usually pull between 90 and 100 on any good day. I situate these in the "Prego Tank" and place only the "Poppers" into the maternity rack. The Poppers are the HUGE females that will birth within 24 hours. Now,... one might think that caring for a couple thousand rats (conservative figure) would be a big task. But due to the systems that I personally designed and built, it may take 20 minutes to pull and situate the pregos. Another 20 to 30 minutes to change shavings in the maternity rack every few days, but my wife usually does that. But all of the systems are built with the means to hold a month's supply of food in large reservoirs designed to deliver the food via gravity flow. And in addition to this they are all on auto-water valve systems. So there is SO little maintainence it is laughable. It's even enjoyable at times. The rabbit colonies are very similar but do need to have their food trays topped every week or so. But they are all on auto-water systems as well. So you see, this requires very little time to maintain and leaves time for other things. "Running through snakes" each day takes maybe 40 to 50 minutes. My wife will begin on one end of the room with one trash can and I begin on the other and we meet in the middle. But all in all,. it's all very easy. I'm surprised more people don't do it. (breed for a living, that is)

How do you sell your snakes(website,Wholesale,Word of mouth)?
When can we see pics of your snake/feeder rooms?

BrianSmith Jul 11, 2003 01:35 PM

Yes, mostly word of mouth. I often have 100% of my offspring sold or traded before they are hatched or birthed.

I will post some pics of my snake rooms as soon as I can get some taken and loaded into the gallery. I am really proud of my snake rooms. Thanks for asking.

Brian,

I've always believed that the key to success in any business is organization. It seems like you've perfected your procedures to as great a degree as any breeder. People should be jealous of your success, and obviously they are. Keep up the good work.

Just out of curiosity, how do you sanitize yourself between cage cleanings at such a fast pace?

BrianSmith Jul 11, 2003 06:10 PM

It's a product called "Purell" Hand Sanitizer. It is a waterless sanitizing gel. It only costs about 5 bucks a bottle and a bottle lasts me over a month. It kills 99.99% of all germs. I highly reccomend it.
