so if i gave the quail vitamins is would be ok???

the fat count looks to be close between the rat and quail... so i guess that should not cause a problem..

if i'm missing something please clue me in...

That is a great table. I am no mathematician,or spelling bee champ, but if you add up the fat, protein and ash for a quail, don't you come up with like 113% ??? Can any one explain that?

RoyerReptiles Apr 17, 2005 12:50 PM

That RodentPro (and I still can't believe they did this!) stole those charts from this paper www.nal.usda.gov/awic/zoo/WholePreyFinal02May29.pdf

I say stole because they copied the work to their website with no reference to the original document or credit to the researchers.

Anyhow, you have to know what the values mean and how to calculate them for it to be of much use. It's a little complicated, but worth learning...you should be able to find some good info by doing a google search.

It is not a misteak that fat protein and ash add up to over 100%? You are correct, I do not know how to use the tables, but I thought those numbers should add up to 100% or less. I am a simple man with a simple plan though. Feed snake rats, make big, breed lots. LOL

RoyerReptiles Apr 17, 2005 03:48 PM

LOL Sounds like a good plan! : )
I have not looked at that paper in a couple years, but something sounds awry. I'll take a look tonight and see if I can answer your question.

Thanks.

I took a brief look and this is what I think (although it's been awhile since I studied this subject) The "n" value is 17, meaning the data was gathered from 17 animals. and using a proximate analysis, it's possible that the numbers averaged in a manner that makes the total more or less than 100%. To get an "as fed" approximation, multiply the crude value x moisture content and divide by 100.

so should i feed my snakes quail as their main diet or no??? lol

I would go 1:1 mammal to fowl (1 rat feeding, then 1 quail feeding), or as much as 1:2. My only concern would be in regards to calcium phosphorus ratios, but quite frankly, I'm not sure if the needs of a boa regarding mineral requirements has been scientifically established.

Their poop smells REALLY bad when they eat birds...just a warning.

best of luck

shhawke Apr 17, 2005 09:52 PM

well no one likes an odor and i would not like it if they stunk up my new building because of eating birds... i guess i'll stick with rats...
i just really DONT like rats... they... well i dont like them... lol...

don't completely dismiss the idea, though. Birds can be very good ammo for enticing stubborn feeders to get back in the swing of things and also for helping recovery weight gain after partution.

shhawke Apr 18, 2005 12:26 AM

i'll keep it in mind... but i dont think i'll start mass producing my quail now... lol
