Water Bowls, To use or not to use...

reptileking90 Apr 16, 2005 08:09 PM

That is the question I currently give my baby cresteds a water bowl( I also mist my babies cages every night) but it is a pain in the a#S to clean and change everyday. I currently don't give my adults waterbowls (I just mist there cage fairly heavy) and they do fine. Could I just do the same thing with my babys.

Thanks Derek

How many water bowls could you be changing each day that makes it a pain? I really dont see it as that hard of a task myself

I provide a water bowl because I know my gecko wil drink from it, I have watched him. If he is thirsty, I dont want to force him to wait for misting time each night.

i dont use one for my female gecko, she dosent use them at all, just a heavy misting every night, my male on the other hand uses them every day. i guess using them depends on if your geckos use them or not, and if you mist regularly or not, or have a dripper. that seems like it would solve all the problems, hmmm. might try that.

i agree. my breeding pair both drink from a water bowl. my four sub-adults all drink from the daily misting. it seems to what they all prefer.

I mist my cages and also add an extra squirt of water to my gecko's food (babyfood/CGD). That way, there is water available during the day and if they're thirsty at night, there's also quite a bit of liquid left in the food dish. I would recommend making water available at all times of the day, be it a waterdish or through misting. Quite a few people mist only once a day, but it won't hurt to mist more, especially if your cage is completely screen. Its going to depend on how much ventiliation; whether or not the droplets dry faster than she can drink them.

I've also heard of people using small waterfalls. This keeps the cage humidified and also provides a place for geckos to drink. I've heard some stories where geckos can climb inside, tho, so use discretion.

p.s. You must have a pretty hard life for changing waterbowls to put you out. I, personally, can think of many things worse than changing waterbowls (ie. cleaning large snake cages or even cleaning rat cages).

it can become a pain, between my gargoyles and cresteds i have 23 different geckos to care for. It can become a real chore after a while, I can understand his point of view because of the time I spend on my animals every day. Im only 21 though so I probably have more time than most, but I can definitely see it becoming a pain after a while.

Derek,
I have over one hundred adult Rhacos, and when it is baby making season, I can have 2 or 3 times that number. I only mist babies until they are about 3 months old. After that it is all water bowl. I feed about every other day, and dump and refill water when I'm doing that. If there is water available geckos will find it. This goes not only for Rhacos, but many other species of geckos that I keep that are "supposed" to be misted. Including Uroplatus, and Phelsuma. I run a humidifier in my gecko room to prevent excess moisture loss. This system works great and is very efficient for me.

What is the humidity level in your gecko room? I have several gauges around, but I can't get it over 40% so I mist everybody twice per day, enough so that it is dry again 12 hours later so I don't have to worry about mold.
