Question on Yellow Ratsnakes.

Steve_Craig Apr 16, 2005 10:54 PM

IF one were to purchase a baby yellow rat, can you tell at an early age, (hatchlings, yearlings) if they are going to be more of a brighter, buttery type of yellow as opposed to the more straw color type of yellow? I guess knowing what the parents look like would go along way in answering that question. Anyway, I may pick one up at a show, and was curious if there were any early signs that point to a future, bright yellow adult. From what I understand, the yellow rats from Florida are more of the brighter yellow then the ones from coastal North Carolian/South Carolina, etc. The one pictured below is an ideal speciman of what I like in a yellow rat. I took this photo last year at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Va. at their wildlife exibit. Awesome looking snake.

I'm no expert on Yellow rats, but I've always felt that the lest contrasty the pattern in the babies, the more colorful they will be as adults. The more the baby looks like a baby black rat (as opposed to a baby everglades) the less yellow it will be. The yellow rats I have hatched, which grew into nice orange yellow adults, all were mid gray on light gray patterned as hatchlings and even had a yellowish wash at birth, particularly on their ventrals.

A good number of the yellow rats in captivity probably originate in the mid to southern parts of Florida where there area nice sulphury yellow snakes.

Steve,
Here are some photos that might help. The first one is of two hatchling yellow rats. The one on the left was produced by breeding a Seminole County, Florida male to a Hillsborough County Florida female. The one on the right was produced by a pair of Palm Beach County, Florida adults.

The snake on the left should end up looking alot like its mother, pictured below:

The hatchling on the right on the first pic should end up looking like its mother, pictured below:

These are old images, sorry for the poor quality.

Those side by side pictures of the yearling and of the adults is a major help. Kind of gives me a guide of what to look for now. Thanks.
