Is there a time to switch to rats?

Dexter6185 Jul 10, 2003 04:35 PM

I have been thumbing through some care sheets and I am beginning to wonder if I am providing my ball with enough to eat. She is around 3 yrs old, 2.5, if not 3 feet long, with conserable girth. She is currently fed 2 adult mice on a weekly basis (every 7-10 days). She sheds monthly, and deficates usually once or twice a month, so I assume she is recieving enough food. Several caresheets however state that a ball her size should feed weekly on 2-3 adult rats. What is your interpretation?

2-3 adult rats? That seems excessive to me. My females in the 3000 gram area would not eat 3 adult rats. They could possible eat 2 adult rats but would not do so weekly. If your snake will eat an adult rat, try one. Then see if it will take another. "Read" your snake. I had one that was 2000 grams eat just 2 mice per week, but she fed 52 weeks a year. While I have another that eats 5 mice once a month. I find consistency easier to deal with.

I have a BP that is three years old and 4ft. He will eat one adult rat every other week or a medium rat once a week. I have had him since he was a hatchling and I have never had a feeding problem.
