tail falling off

i have a garter which i noticed about 2 weeks ago that the tip of his tail was a bit sore, after a couple of days it looked like it was clearing up but i have just had another look and now it looks like its about to fall off. he seem ok but has gone off his food a bit.o yer it first started after a shed, what is best to do for him.thank

It sounds he failed to shed the skin on the tip of the tail. The stuck skin cut off circulation causing the tip to swell and possibly die. Take a close look at the tail and see if you can see some stuck skin, if you see some, soak him for a bit and try to remove it with a small pair of forceps. Once the skin is off put some neosporin on the tip to prevent infection. If there still is some circulation, he might keep the tip. If circulation has already been cut off, the tip will probably fall off.
