Experianced Breeder Question

Kita Apr 17, 2005 04:25 PM

I'm fairly certain there is not a way for me to sex my baby Nile, but I would like to ask an approximate age to an eleven inch baby. This is nose to tail tip. It also has not completely sealed the slit on it's belly where the yolk sac was connected; about one millimeter of healing tissuse is visible.

It was among the smaller of the clutch and some of the others may have been up to two inches longer, but those were already the dominates taking most of the food. I just assume anyone having hutched a number of clutches could recognize this point as a relative age.

Thanks!

For the pet trade alone, so its really hard to even guess on an age. They may be last years imports set aside to keep them small to sell them as new hatchlings this year. They could be anywhere from 1 month to 3 years old or more, who knows with the way they are collected, dehydrated, abused, starved, etc before you get them. If there were many together chances are they were all imported together and are close in age, so your nile is 2 inches smaller than the others, it was dominated by the others on top of the importing abuse.
No way to tell the age at all.
My female albig was 2 months old when I got her, the scar on her stomach looked fresh with no scales on it for almost 2 years, then it seemed to have scale definition.

I had no idea they could be kept small for so long! Very few of them looked skinny, but I will say I hadn't been to the shop for a few weeks.

I actually just noticed the shop listed on Kingsnake today. It's S&S Exotics. I'll ask them next time I'm out there; I had just been so thrilled by the baby and was going over in my mind my surplus of supplies making sure I didn't need anything for it to remeber to ask about that. Am I right about not being able to sex it though?

Thanks a bunch!

Once they get going, its also much easier when you see them in person. Ive seen male niles that stand out as small as 2ft long or smaller.

Okay, thanks. I'm getting him checked out at the vet so I'll be looking into a blood test. Until then, naming will have to wait.

Both male and female have very very high testosterone levels, thats not indicator. Secondary sexual characteristics and an experienced eye are the best way to tell.

Darn. Thanks anyway!

successful and failer at producing baby niles. This litte one only took 2-3 days for the slit to be healed up. It hatched on april 6th.

But like Shvar said the majority of them are imports and there is no way of telling the age on them. Could be a few weeks could be a few months. Most of the ones available are imports even if they say c/b.

How beautiful! My baby is barely bigger than that. I'm hoping I'll have as much luck with it's temper as with my Tokay Gecko. But I'm plenty used to attitude, so either way doens't matter.
