Fawn's Eggs

the4thmonkey Apr 18, 2005 07:56 AM

I was worrying she was overdue, but this morning I came home from work to find eggs. Trampled, crushed eggs, 5 or 6 of them. There is a slim to none chance that one of them will be ok, but it is kind of caved in on one side. She had been digging in the place I made for her but then didn't use it. She laid them out in the open and didn't bury them. She must have walked over them. She and all the other lizards were asleep when I left. Damn, I wish I had been here. But Fawn looks like she came through it ok and I am grateful for that. She is pretty small and it was her first time.

Fawn is also having a bad time shedding. I looked at the "shed help" medications at the pet store and they were made of either aloe vera or mineral oil. I had that at home so gave it a try and also was soaking her in warm water daily. I have not done anything for about the last week because she was just so big and uncomfortable looking. I have most of it off except her head and legs. Any suggestions?

I am wondering why Saige has not become gravid. She has been out of brumation for about 8 weeks now. Fawn brumated a week longer than she did. Do they quit ovulating like humans do? I have the feeling Saige is not a youngster, not because of how active she is, she just seems wise.

As always, thanks for your input.

I've really been enjoying all the pictures posted lately, especially the ones in natural settings. I hope I can go herping soon.

Sometimes though, those dents will pop right out if you get them into a nice humid container ASAP. I've had poor looking eggs that hatched just fine. I have nearly thrown out eggs that looked like crap. Sadly to say, I've even opened eggs that I thought were bad only to find a tiny moving lizard fetus.

Be ready for next time...now that you know she may lay on the sand surface, dampen the whole area, or move her to a separate container with more damp areas than dry.

well you can always stick it in the incubator. the dent could mean that it is a little dry and with the moisture in the vermiculite or perlite it could fill back out. sorry to hear about the rest of the eggs but i am glad that your girl is ok.
i use mineral oil on stuck sheds. i read this thing once on melissa kaplan's page about wrapping them in a warm wet towel for five minutes and then rubbing mineral oil on them. it did wonders on my rescued uromastyx's tail, which had many many layers of stuck shed.

its a bummer, same thing my girl layed during the night when we were out, and came home to eggs kicked and trampled on everywhere.

But hey Fawns fine, and thats the important thing. She will lay again in about 3-4 weeks,

I agree on the shed thing (MINERAL OIL) works great , softens right up. Also a couple mistings(they don't like it) but spray them, and it helps them to shed

Nice to see you ,

I am not terribly upset about the eggs. It is a real shame she went throught that for nothing, but I could not have kept any of the babies anyway. I did put the one that was not crushed in the incubator, but has collapsed even more.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why Fawn became gravid but not Saige. Is there "lizard menopause"?

i have no idea, maybe she is just not feeling it this year. last year ivan was dropping eggs like crazy and this year she has only laid one so far with no signs of another coming. i thought last year that milly was too young and in august she finally decided to turn gravid. i have learned that they will do whatever it takes to make us crazy
