basking surface issue

urozilla Apr 18, 2005 01:30 PM

anyone have any issue with their basking surface gradually going over the desired temp you want it to be at? in my enclosure during my guys mid day (mid day of his 14 hour lights) his backing surface will be 120 degrees. an hour after the temp increases to up to high 124 degrees. i have a rock as his basking surface. should i leave that alone or maybe change his rock to another? or will i get same results with a different rock? should i maybe use a wooden surface or something other than rock? any ideas?

thnx gang

well, i don't think going up to 124 is a huge deal under the basking spot. some people have their basking spots layered and it goes from like 140 down to 120.

i don't think 124°F is that harmful. i've read some people allow their surface temps get up to 140°F. that seems a little high, but they can chime in here if they want.

my surface temp tends to creep a couple degrees above 125°F at midday and my uro just moves off to the side a little bit if it gets too hot. sometimes, he's right smack in the middle of it soaking it all up. i think they're pretty good at finding the right temp they need. you just have to make sure it's available.

anyway, if you're not comfortable with 124°F, and you must have it at 120°F exactly, you can try a lighter colored rock or move your light up a little higher.

My basking area ranges from 122 to 127 degrees depending on how long the lights have been on. 124 is not a problem.
